The Sister Cities Program was first created in 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in order to strengthen partnerships between U.S. and international cities with the hope that personal relationships fostered through sister city affiliations would lessen the chance of future world conflicts. Los Angeles began its Sister Cities program in 1959 with Nagoya, Japan and now includes twenty-one Sister Cities over six continents.
